KNUST Alumnus Prof. Kingsley Badu Champions AI-Driven Mosquito Surveillance for Disease Prevention

The KNUST Alumni community is celebrating one of its distinguished alumni, Prof. Kingsley Badu, whose pioneering research is harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionise mosquito surveillance and strengthen disease prevention efforts in Ghana and beyond.

Prof. Badu, an Associate Professor in the Department of Theoretical and Applied Biology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), shared his latest research during the KNUST Libraries' ScienceFriday programme on the theme, "Listening to Mosquitoes: Translating Flight Sounds into Data for Disease Monitoring."

A proud alumnus of KNUST, Prof. Badu demonstrated how AI, bioacoustics, and machine learning can be combined to identify mosquito species through their wingbeat sounds and images, providing a faster and more accurate approach to mosquito surveillance. He explained that understanding mosquito behaviour is fundamental to developing effective disease control interventions.

Emphasising the importance of research with real-world impact, Prof. Badu noted that scientific discoveries should extend beyond academic publications to produce practical solutions that improve lives and strengthen public health. He revealed that his research team has developed an AI-powered mosquito surveillance system and a mobile application capable of identifying mosquito species from photographs, with plans to integrate both technologies into a fully automated surveillance platform.

The innovative project brings together experts in biology, engineering, computer science, mathematics, and physics, demonstrating the power of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing global health challenges.
