The Governing Council of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, at its 292nd (Special) Meeting held on Wednesday, 13th May 2026, appointed distinguished KNUST alumnus, Professor Christian Agyare, as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University for a four-year term spanning 1st August 2026 to 31st July 2030.
Professor Agyare succeeds Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson and becomes the 13th Vice-Chancellor in the history of KNUST since the University’s establishment in 1951.
A respected academic, globally recognised researcher, pharmacist, and transformational leader, Professor Agyare’s appointment marks another proud moment for the KNUST alumni community. His journey from student to Vice-Chancellor reflects years of dedication, excellence, service, and commitment to advancing higher education and scientific research both in Ghana and internationally.
Professor Agyare obtained his Bachelor of Pharmacy and Master of Pharmacy degrees from KNUST before pursuing a Doctor rerum naturalium (Dr. rer. nat.) degree at the University of Münster in Germany. Over the years, he has built an outstanding international academic and research profile through research and postdoctoral appointments at institutions including Novartis/Seeding Labs in Boston and the University of California, San Francisco.
Currently serving as Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Agyare has played a significant role in shaping academic growth, research development, and institutional transformation within KNUST. Under his leadership, the College has expanded academic programmes, increased postgraduate enrolment, and undertaken major infrastructure development initiatives.
Beyond administration, Professor Agyare is widely recognised for his remarkable contributions to pharmaceutical sciences and healthcare research. As a Professor of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, he has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and earned international recognition for his research in antimicrobial resistance, natural products pharmacology, wound healing, parasitology, ethnopharmacology, and anticancer drug discovery. His scholarly work has attracted global attention and positioned him among Ghana’s leading researchers.
Over the years, he has secured more than USD 11 million in competitive research grants and funding support from globally respected institutions and organisations, including the German Research Foundation (DFG), DAAD, the Mastercard Foundation, the World Bank, and other international partners.
Professor Agyare has also held several strategic leadership roles within KNUST, serving on key University committees and previously leading the Quality Assurance and Planning Unit, where he championed major institutional reforms, policy development, and technology-driven systems to improve governance and operational efficiency.
Known for his commitment to mentorship, innovation, collaboration, and human capital development, Professor Agyare continues to inspire many within and beyond academia. His vision for KNUST is centred on advancing research, innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and student-centred learning while strengthening the University’s global competitiveness and impact.
