Nearly two decades after his time as President of the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), David Boateng Asante is reflecting on a student leadership experience that he says laid an important foundation for his subsequent journey in public service, governance and leadership.
David, who served as SRC President in 2006, looks back on his time at KNUST with fondness, describing it as a period of active student advocacy, institutional engagement and opportunities that prepared him for responsibilities beyond the University.
Among the highlights of his administration were the completion of the first phase of the SRC Hostel, the expansion of the Ketewa Biara Nsua (KBN) Fund, which provided financial support to brilliant but needy students, and efforts that contributed to strengthening the campus shuttle system. His administration also acquired a new Coaster bus for the SRC, which was subsequently added to the University's fleet.
Beyond these projects, David considers his exposure to University governance one of the most valuable aspects of his tenure. As SRC President, he served on the University Council and Academic Board, giving him the opportunity, at a relatively young age, to participate in institutional decision-making and engage directly with senior University leaders.
“Leadership at the highest level started from there. Boardroom experience started from the University, certainly with the University Council,” he recalls.
That early exposure would become an important thread in David's professional journey. After graduating in 2007, he went on to become a prominent voice in Ghana's civic and political space, including serving as Lead Convener of the Let My Vote Count Alliance. In 2017, he was appointed Managing Director of the Ghana Publishing Company Limited, where he served for more than seven years and was involved in efforts to modernise and digitalise the organisation.
He also pursued parliamentary ambitions, contesting the New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries for the Nkawkaw Constituency in 2020 and again ahead of the 2024 general election.
Looking back, David believes KNUST's student leadership environment gave young people the opportunity to develop confidence, practical leadership skills and an understanding of governance at an early stage.
“Those were brilliant and bright opportunities for young student leaders to sharpen their leadership skills. It prepared us for a smooth take-off to the national level.”
His story is a reminder that the KNUST experience does not end at graduation. For many alumni, the University serves as the starting point for journeys that extend into different sectors of society. David Boateng Asante's transition from student leader to public servant and corporate executive is one such journey, and a reflection of the lasting influence of leadership opportunities at KNUST.
Today, his story remains part of the broader KNUST alumni story: one of learning, leadership, service and impact beyond the classroom.
