Dr. (Mrs.) Martha Gyansa-Lutterodt is a distinguished alumna of KNUST, where she obtained her Bachelor of Pharmacy in 1987 and Doctor of Pharmacy in 2018. With an illustrious career spanning several decades, she has established herself as a highly accomplished and respected pharmacist, making significant contributions to Ghana’s pharmaceutical and healthcare sector. Her remarkable professional journey, leadership, and commitment to service exemplify the impact of KNUST alumni in advancing society.
Dr. Gyansa-Lutterodt is an independent Health Consultant whose distinguished career spans pharmaceutical services, health policy and regulation. She made history as Ghana’s first female Chief Pharmacist and Director of Pharmaceutical Services and later became the first substantive Director of Technical Coordination at the Ministry of Health. She has also served as an expert member of the World Health Organization, pioneered efforts in antimicrobial resistance, and chairs the AU-NEPAD African Medicines Regulatory Harmonization Committee. These are but a few highlights of her remarkable career and contributions to healthcare.
A seasoned governance and global health expert with over 35 years of public sector experience, Dr. Gyansa-Lutterodt has led major initiatives in health systems strengthening, policy development and regulatory harmonization in Ghana, Africa and globally. She spearheaded Ghana’s response to antimicrobial resistance, leading to the country’s first Antimicrobial Policy and Action Plan. She has publications on antimicrobial resistance, access to essential medicines, pharmaceutical policy and universal health coverage. She has also contributed to key continental frameworks on AMR control and medicines regulation, further establishing her as a respected thought leader in global health governance and policy. She was conferred with the Order of the Volta (Member) by the Government of Ghana in April 2023, one of the country’s highest national honours, in recognition of her significant contributions to healthcare and COVID-19 management.
Dr. Gyansa-Lutterodt has championed access to safe, quality and affordable medicines while strengthening the role of pharmacists in community healthcare. She has championed the evolving role of pharmacists in public health, encouraging greater participation in national health Programmes and policy processes. Through mentorship, professional leadership and capacity building, she has helped equip the next generation of pharmacists to better serve communities and contribute to national health priorities.
Dr. Gyansa-Lutterodt remains actively involved in the KNUST Alumni community through mentoring young alumni and students. She continues to give back to the University through professional engagement, mentorship and support for the development of future pharmacists. She has twice served as Speaker at KNUST’s White Coat Ceremonies for Pharmacy students and as a Speaker at the College of Health Sciences Graduation Ceremony, contributing significantly to the development of the University’s emerging Health Professionals.
